Officer Will Appel was recently dispatched to a call of a women in crisis learning when he arrived the woman had found out about the possible tragic passing of her son through social media. Officer Appel took the time to comfort the mother while awaiting further news of her sons fate. He arranged for family support which was well outside of the city limits. Having built a relationship with the mother and upon confirming her sons passing, Officer Appel gained supervisor permission, coordinated with Braveheart Chaplain Michelle Van Allen, traveled outside of the KPD jurisdiction and notified the mother in person. In the midst of unbelievable grief the mother took the time to drop off a thank you card for Officer Appel and Chaplain Van Allen for the impact they made. Our team sees themselves as far more than law enforcement officers, we are also privileged to be “community caretakers”. This is an excellent example of the impact we can have on people, and how important it is to show compassion to those suffering through tragedy and grief.
