THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION WAS PROVIDED BY THE MONTANA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION & WAS UPDATED ON 5/31/2019. THESE ARE NOT CITY PROJECTS.
Kalispell Urban Project:
Workers are scheduled to chip seal six central Kalispell roads beginning Monday, June 3 as part of a pavement preservation project in the downtown area. All work is weather permitting. Crews will lay a chip seal on the following roadways: North Meridian Road, 7th Street West, 7th Avenue West, East Center Street, East Evergreen Drive and Foys Lake Road. Chip sealing is anticipated to conclude later that week, as long as the weather holds.
A chip seal is a protective coating applied to the surface of a road to prevent water from seeping into the asphalt. When water does pass through a surface, it expands and contracts during the freeze-thaw cycle, deteriorating the road over time. A chip seal helps prevent that from happening, therefore extending the life of the road.
In order for the chip seal to properly cure, travelers will see single-lane closures during the day along with detours on select roads. Delays of up to 15 minutes are also anticipated during the chip seal process. Work will take place during the day from 9 a.m. to as late as 8 p.m.
Drivers are asked to travel with caution through active work zones for the safety of all involved. Fines do double when workers are present.

U.S. Highway 2 (LaSalle Road):
During the week of June 2, the Montana Department of Transportation will continue upgrading sidewalks, curbs and gutters along U.S. Highway 2 (LaSalle Road). The improved sidewalks will include textured ramps, known as “truncated domes,” to help alert people with visual impairments that they are approaching a roadway. These upgrades will bring the sidewalks into compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act standards, improving access for all in the Evergreen area.
Milling and paving will also continue during the week from the intersection Cottonwood Drive to Spring Creek Drive/Sunset Drive. From 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., single-lane closures will be in place so crews can work safely. Side street traffic entering U.S. 2 could be delayed up to 20 minutes during that period.
U.S. Highway 93 (Sunset Boulevard):
Workers will also make similar sidewalks upgrades along U.S. Highway 93 (Sunset Boulevard) at the following intersections: East Washington Street, East Oregon Street, East California Street and East Nevada Street. Milling and paving on U.S. 93 is scheduled to begin in mid-June, weather allowing.
Residents along both roadways should expect nighttime noise during working hours of 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. on U.S. 2 and from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. on U.S. 93. Crews are mindful of these impacts and will work to keep noise levels to a minimum.
Travelers are asked to exercise caution when navigating an active work zone, especially at night when visibility is reduced. Fines do double when workers are present.
