[ARCHIVED] MT Dept. of Transportation - Kalispell Road Work Update 5/28/19

Road Work Ahead, Orange Sign

Construction crews are in the final stages of pavement maintenance in and around downtown Kalispell. During the week of May 26, workers will continue site cleanup on all streets included in the Kalispell Urban project: East Center Street, 7th Avenue West, 7th Street West, East Evergreen Drive, Foys Lake Road and North Meridian Road. These efforts will not impact the flow of traffic, although drivers are asked to travel with caution when workers are present.

In mid-June, workers will return to chip seal all six roads. Single-lane closures and detours will be in place during the day to allow the seal to cure properly. The chip seal process will take less than one week once work begins, weather permitting.

Chip seals help extend the life of a roadway by preventing water from seeping into the asphalt. These protective coatings are also much more cost effective and less impactful than a larger rehabilitation project.

For the week ahead, travelers are reminded to drive carefully through active construction zones. Fines do double in work zones.

U.S. Highway 2 (LaSalle Road):

Sidewalk improvement work will continue on U.S. Highway 2 (LaSalle Road) during the week of May 26. The Montana Department of Transportation will be upgrading sidewalks at multiple intersections to meet Americans with Disabilities Act Standards.

The new sidewalks will include ramps with textured patches, known as “truncated domes,” that help alert people with visual impairments that they are approaching a roadway. Temporary ramps will be installed to allow pedestrian access.

Crews will also continue paving U.S. 2 from the intersection of Sunset Drive/Spring Creek Drive to ¾ of a mile north of Reserve Drive. Workers are scheduled to resurface the center and northbound lanes, weather allowing.

Single-lane closures will be in place from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. while crews pave the roadway. Side street traffic heading onto U.S. 2 could be delayed by up to 20 minutes during milling and paving operations.

U.S. Highway 93 (Sunset Boulevard):

Sidewalk upgrades, similar to those on U.S. 2, are also scheduled to occur along U.S. Highway 93 (Sunset Boulevard). Workers will repair sidewalks at the following intersections: East Washington Street, East Oregon Street, East California Street and East Nevada Street. All work is weather dependent. Crews will return at a later date to improve East Wyoming Street, once school is out for the year.

Residents along U.S. 93 should expect nighttime construction noise between working hours of 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. along with minimal traffic delays. Crews will work to keep noise levels to a minimum. However, similar to the U.S. 2 project schedule, work will not take place on U.S. 93 during the Memorial Day holiday. Work will resume at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, continuing nightly through Friday.
