The City of Kalispell Advanced Wastewater Treatment & Biological Nutrient Removal Facility began operation in October 1992 to protect pristine Flathead Lake, the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi River. The 3.1 million gallon per day Plant is a modified University of Cape Town process and contains a Supervisor Control and Data Acquisition System and a Programmable Logical Controller. It achieves outstanding removal of solids, nutrients and fecal coliform, all without the use of chemicals. As a result, the Plant has received a national first place and two Region VIII first place Operations and Maintenance Excellence Awards from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency; a Commendation of Excellence Award from the Flathead Basin Commission; and a System of the Year Award from Montana Rural Water Systems. The City is planning to double the size of the plant over the next several years to accommodate growth. The project will add to or replace some units and modify others to stay with current concept of treatment without the use of chemicals. The improvements will also include a biological state-of-the-art odor control system. Organizations or individuals with a professional interest in learning more about the Plant are welcome to contact the Water Resource Manager, Joni Emrick, at 406-758-7817. ![]() |
