I. GENERAL CLASS DESCRIPTION:
Performs a wide variety of all-risk response, technical work in fire suppression, emergency aid, hazardous materials, and fire prevention activities. This includes risk reduction and prevention, fire suppression, rescue, and hazardous materials operations. The department also provides basic and advanced life support emergency medical response, treatment, and medical transportation. The Fire Department provides all-risk response inside the city limits, and emergency medical response to a large service area outside of the city limits.
II. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:
a. Respond to emergency and non-emergency incidents as a member of a fire department team.
b. Operate fire apparatus and firefighting equipment under emergency conditions.
c. Skilled delivery of basic and advanced emergency medical care and transportation.
d. Inspect and test fire apparatus and firefighting equipment.
e. Perform general maintenance work, upkeep of fire facilities, and equipment.
f. Participate in continuing education and training.
g. May function as a member of a specialized team.
h. Respond from off-duty as needed for additional staffing.
i. Performs other duties as assigned.

VI. TECHNICAL TASKS:
a. Performs all job duties in compliance with the established rules and regulations of the City of Kalispell.
b. Demonstrates accountability and responsibility for completion of work assignments in the absence of a department supervisor; provides responsive and timely feedback to supervisory staff on status and progress of work activities.
c. Promotes safe work practices and ensures compliance with City safety policies.
d. Assists in the development of operating procedures, policies, rules and regulations.
e. Attends meetings, seminars, training programs, conferences and other related events as required.
f. Maintains individual knowledge and skills to be able to carry out all duties of position.
g. Handles other responsibilities and duties as assigned or needed

Works under the general of the Fire Chief or his/her designee.

IX. DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED equivalent.
X. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
a. Ability to learn the operation of fire suppression and other emergency equipment;
b. Ability to learn to apply standard firefighting, basic life support skills, hazardous materials, and fire prevention techniques;
c. Ability to perform strenuous or peak physical effort during emergencies, training or station maintenance activities for prolonged periods of time under conditions of extreme heights, intense heat, cold or smoke;
d. Ability to act effectively in emergency and stressful situations;
e. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions;
f. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing;
g. Ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the general public;
h. Ability to meet the special requirements listed below.
XI. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
a. Must hold a current National Registry and State of Montana EMT-B (Basic) certification at the time of hire.
b. Must be 18 years or older at the time of employment.
c. Must possess, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid Montana State driver's license and the applicant’s driving history will be taken into consideration.
d. No felony convictions or disqualifying criminal histories within the past seven years.
e. Must be a U.S. citizen.
f. Must be able to read and write the English language.
g. Must be able to respond from home to the closest Kalispell Fire Station within 15 minutes under normal driving conditions within six months of hire.
XII. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
Fire apparatus, fire firefighting equipment, ladders, basic and advanced life support equipment, emergency medical vehicles, radio, pager, personal computer, phone.

c. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, except during certain firefighting or EMS activities when noise levels may be loud.

XV. SELECTION GUIDELINES:
a. Written and signed City of Kalispell Job Applications will be reviewed.
b. Top applicants will be selected to take written and physical examinations.
c. Applicants who successfully pass the written test will then take part in the Cooper Standard for Public Safety Employees physical tests. You must pass all components of the physical test noted below.

300 meter run 66 seconds maximum
One minute push-up 25 minimum
1.5 mile run 15:54 minutes maximum
Note: Because this is considered a strenuous physical test we highly recommend you consult with your health care provider before participating.
It is the applicant’s responsibility to wear the appropriate attire for the weather conditions. The fitness evaluation will be conducted outside.
d. Upon the successful completion of the writing and physical testing applicants will be given the Johnson-Roberts psychological exam.
e. Upon completing and passing the Johnson-Roberts psychological exam; applicants will be evaluated by an oral board(s).
f. Successful applicants will then be ranked on a list for hire. Applicants selected for hire must pass a post-offer comprehensive physical exam and drug screening prior to employment.
